Head of People & Culture
- Lead the people strategy and operational HR delivery for a commercial law firm.
- Oversee workforce planning, talent acquisition, and employee relations.
- Shape the people function and implement HR systems.
THE ORGANISATION
Our client is a highly regarded, established commercial law firm with a strong reputation in the Australian market. Based in Sydney, the firm has approximately 120 employees and offers the opportunity to work closely with an accessible and highly experienced partnership.
The firm has a stable platform, a collegiate culture and an appetite for continued, measured growth. It is now seeking an accomplished HR professional to lead its people agenda and further develop the capability, systems and impact of the function.
THE ROLE
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of People & Culture will take ownership of the firm’s people strategy while remaining closely involved in operational HR delivery. Leading a small team, the role will work directly with partners and business leaders across the complete employee lifecycle.
Key responsibilities will include workforce planning, talent acquisition, performance and remuneration, employee relations, leadership capability, learning and development, engagement, succession and policy development. The role will also oversee the firm’s float legal support team and reception function.
This is an opportunity to shape a relatively lean people function, introduce greater structure and consistency, and lead several important projects, including the selection and implementation of an HRIS. The successful candidate will have the autonomy to identify priorities, make practical recommendations and deliver improvements suited to the size and culture of the firm.
THE CRITERIA
To be successful in this position, you will be an experienced HR generalist with previous experience gained within a law firm. You may already be leading the people function within a smaller or mid-sized firm, or be a senior HR professional ready to step into your first Head of People & Culture role.
You will bring strong employee relations capability, sound commercial judgement and the confidence to advise partners and senior stakeholders. Experience across performance, remuneration, talent, workforce planning and organisational development will be important, together with the ability to move comfortably between strategic priorities and hands-on delivery.
This role will suit someone proactive, pragmatic and credible who enjoys building trusted relationships and taking genuine ownership. Experience managing legal support staff and implementing or improving HR systems would be advantageous.
