Magistrates Clerks play a central role in the delivery of justice in South Australia
As a Magistrates Clerk, you will work at the heart of the courtroom, supporting Magistrates to ensure proceedings run smoothly, fairly and with respect to the authority of the Court. This is a dynamic and highly visible role that combines courtroom coordination with high-level administrative support in Chambers.
Every day brings new challenges. You’ll coordinate the orderly flow of matters before the Magistrate, anticipate and resolve issues as they arise, and liaise with judicial officers, legal practitioners, government agencies and members of the public, including self-represented parties. Outside of court, you’ll prepare accurate records, orders, judgments and case files, ensuring the integrity of the Court’s work is maintained.
This is not a standard administrative role. It requires professionalism, discretion and initiative in a highly formal and public setting. You’ll be relied upon to make quick, sound decisions under pressure while supporting the proper administration and independence of the Court
As the role requires a specific skill set, Magistrates Clerks are supported with initial training of 3 to 4 weeks at the Adelaide Magistrates Court followed by a period of at least 2 months (full-time) at the Port Augusta Magistrates Court. Clerks gain a diverse experience working across all jurisdictions within the Magistrates Court, including the Youth Court.
You may wish to attend an open Court session at the Magistrates Court to see what the role of Magistrates Clerk entails - it's a fascinating opportunity to see how the Courts operate in real-time.
Multiple positions available at Port Augusta location of varying tenures, full-time and part-time (minimum 22.5 hrs per week).
