It also undertakes ground-breaking medical research, delivers education across the health sector and supports philanthropic activities through Mater Foundation.
The opportunity
This is an opportunity to contribute to the governance of a large, complex, purpose-led healthcare organisation. You will bring informed oversight of clinical quality, patient outcomes and enterprise risk, alongside the capacity to engage meaningfully in strategy, financial sustainability, organisational culture and future growth.
Mater’s culture reflects its Catholic identity and Mercy tradition. For more than a century, its Mission, Vision and Values have guided its response to unmet community need and its commitment to compassionate, safe and sustainable care. The successful candidate will demonstrate clear alignment with these values and help foster a culture that promotes ethical decision-making, accountability, and the quality and safety of services across Queensland.
A collaborative, diligent director who combines constructive challenge with curiosity, independence and practical understanding of the challenges facing contemporary healthcare is required.
Your experience and contribution
You will bring:
- Established Non-Executive Director experience, with experience in a healthcare organisation of comparable operating complexity preferred.
- Significant expertise in clinical governance, patient safety, quality improvement and assurance.
- Contemporary healthcare leadership insight, gained through recent executive experience or substantive ongoing governance responsibilities.
- The ability to proactively contribute across the whole organisation, connecting clinical outcomes with strategy, people, risk and financial stewardship.
- Sound judgement, strong stakeholder engagement and a collaborative approach to Board deliberations.
- Sufficient capacity to prepare thoroughly, participate actively and meet Board, committee and travel commitments.
- Alignment with, and demonstrated commitment to supporting Mater’s Catholic identity, Mercy mission and values.
Applications are invited from experienced Board directors who have had a medical, nursing, allied health, healthcare executive, clinical regulatory, patient safety or quality background. Professionals with substantial clinical governance capability gained outside clinical practice are also encouraged to express interest.
An understanding of the Federal and State healthcare environment, regulations and stakeholder networks will be valuable. Experience in organisational growth, transformation or integration, and potential for future committee or Board leadership, will be well regarded.
Location and commitment
Interstate candidates will be considered where they can demonstrate availability to attend in person meetings in Brisbane and regional Queensland.
The commitment required is approximately 3 days per month in physical attendance, for the 9 Board and 6 governance sub-committee meetings and annual strategy planning session, with additional time spent in preparation to be able to proactively participate in meetings. Independence, competing interests and existing commitments will be assessed.
Candidates who bring diverse perspectives, professional backgrounds and lived experience are invited to apply. This is a paid Board position in line with market expectations.
For a confidential discussion, contact Peter Murphy, Director, C3Talent on ************. Applications close at 6pm on Monday 26th October.
