Our electrical and communications services industry client is looking for Technical writer in Melbourne on FTC basis.

Key Responsibilities / Accountabilities

  • Write and format inspection and test plans to a single agreed SME standard.
  • Build the master ITP library so that inspection points, evidence requirements and acceptance criteria are consistent across projects.
  • Interview site teams to capture how tasks are actually performed.
  • Convert proven work methods into standard operating procedures with named owners, revision control and review dates.
  • Source acceptance criteria from project specifications, drawings and Australian Standards, and quote the values within the document.
  • Tailor generic ITPs and SOPs to contract requirements and project risks ahead of mobilisation.
  • Apply document numbering, revision control and approval workflow so that every document is traceable.
  • Maintain the document register and keep superseded versions clearly marked.
  • Incorporate review comments from the Quality Manager, engineering and site supervision.
  • Update ITPs and SOPs when non-conformances and lessons learned identify a gap.
  • Prepare supporting material such as visual work guides and pre-start aids where they improve uptake on site.

Key Capabilities / Experience
Essential

  • Strong technical writing skills, with the ability to write plainly for a site audience and keep instructions short enough to be used on the tools.
  • Experience producing controlled documents under revision and approval control.
  • Confidence interviewing tradespeople and supervisors to draw out how work is really done, and the judgement to push past vague answers.
  • Advanced Microsoft Word: templates, styles, numbering, tables and cross-references applied consistently across a large document set.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel for maintaining registers and trackers.
  • Organised and self-directed, able to run a document programme to agreed deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Attention to detail, particularly with numeric acceptance criteria, hold and witness points, and cross-references between documents.

Desirable

  • Experience writing inspection and test plans, checklists or quality forms in a construction, manufacturing or utilities setting.
  • Familiarity with electrical installation work and the terminology used on site.
  • Ability to produce simple visual aids such as annotated photographs, sketches and single-page field guides.
  • Ability to read drawings, specifications and Australian Standards and pull firm requirements out of them, including numeric acceptance criteria

Qualifications / Certifications
Required

  • Demonstrated experience in technical writing, documentation or procedure development.
  • Construction Industry General Safety Induction (White Card), or willingness to obtain one before attending site.
  • Current Australian driver’s licence, with the ability to travel between project sites.
