POSITION OVERVIEW
HSHS has a significant growth agenda and aspires to become a $5-$12B health system over the next 5-7 years. As a core member of the HSHS executive leader team and reporting to the CEO, the Senior Vice President and Chief Growth and Strategy Officer defines and leads a clear and compelling strategy to accomplish this significant growth and expansion goal for HSHS. This growth strategy is regionally and locally sensitive, service area specific, and designed to achieve sustainable growth and strong organizational performance. The growth strategy focuses on expanding access to quality healthcare, strengthening physician alignment and market position, optimizing the ambulatory care distribution network, expanding services and capabilities in key markets, and enhancing the success of regional tertiary care centers of excellence.
The Chief Growth and Strategy Officer will provide strong leadership and support. The Chief Growth and Strategy Officer will establish trusting relationships throughout HSHS in order to promote a strong sense of teamwork and “system-ness”. He/she will serve as a role model for integrity and accountability and will play a major role in positioning HSHS for both short-term and long-term success.
Duty to the Mission
The Chief Growth and Strategy Officer supports the Mission of Catholic Health Care as a Ministry of the Church, supports the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, the teachings of the Catholic Church, and the mission principles of HSHS. The leader will always uphold the best interest of HSHS, adhering to the highest standards of ethical and moral conduct and commitment to the values inherent in the HSHS mission.
Key Responsibilities
The Chief Growth and Strategy Officer will provide strong and steady leadership to maximize the financial performance of HSHS. Specific duties include:
- Defines and leads the health system’s growth strategy, aligned with organizational mission, strategic priorities, and financial objectives, and identifies opportunities for sustainable growth and expansion across markets, services, populations, and channels.
- Leads the evaluation of strategic investments (M&A), affiliations, joint ventures, acquisitions, and other business development opportunities and develops recommendations that align with organizational priorities and create sustainable value.
- Evaluates and develops strategies to expand and strengthen the organization’s presence in existing and emerging markets by assessing population needs, market dynamics, competitive positioning, access opportunities, and financial potential.
- Leads the strategic development and optimization of the ambulatory care network, identifying opportunities to expand locations, services, providers, and access points to create an integrated and market-responsive delivery network.
- Identifies and prioritizes opportunities to grow key clinical service lines and partners with clinical and operational leaders to develop and execute strategies for new or expanded services based on market demand, physician capacity, competitive positioning, and financial opportunity.
- Develops strategies to strengthen physician alignment and partnerships that support organizational growth, including physician recruitment, network development, strategic affiliations, and other opportunities to expand access and market presence.
- Establishes growth objectives and performance measures, monitors progress against strategic priorities, evaluates results, and adjusts strategies to respond to changing market conditions and organizational performance.
- Serves as a strategic advisor to the CEO and executive leadership team on growth opportunities, market strategy, and strategic investments and communicates recommendations and performance to the Board and other key stakeholders.
- Leads a team of colleagues in human resource initiatives including but not limited to; performance management; education and development; selection and retention; workforce planning; coaching and counseling; and supporting activities that promote colleague engagement and satisfaction.
- Leads or supports the financial resource functions including but not limited to; managing expenses; preparing, monitoring and executing within limits of the budget; monitors productivity standards; manages the purchasing process and all decisions related to the finances for the area of responsibility.
- Leads or supports change and process improvement initiatives including but not limited to; strives for standard, efficient and value-added processes; communicates a clear vision; influences and motivates others; and develops strong relationships with key stakeholders.
CANDIDATE QUALIFICATIONS
The Chief Growth and Strategy Officer serves as a senior leader in a large, complex, multi-site health system. In partnership with the CEO and executive team, the Chief Growth and Strategy Officer must have the confidence and skills/abilities to lead HSHS to consistent strong financial performance and long-term success.
The Chief Growth and Strategy Officer will possess outstanding communication, listening and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish trust, credibility and positive rapport with a broad set of executives and constituencies. He/she must be current on healthcare financial trends, policies, and regulations, both locally and nationally.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- A minimum of seven years experience developing and executing enterprise-level growth strategies across multiple healthcare markets or service areas, including experience with mergers and acquisitions, strategic partnerships, joint ventures, and more.
- Minimum of five years leadership experience within a health system, hospital, physician organization, or other complex healthcare organization.
- Has advanced analytical and decision-making skills to organize, plan, and coordinate operational activities of the hospitals and participate in long-term strategic plans for growth.
- A proven track record of leading/contributing consistent, successful financial performance for a large healthcare enterprise.
- Able to effectively execute organizational strategies, measure progress and commit to continually seeking opportunities for process improvement.
- Effectively coach colleagues to ensure high performance and/or prepare to success in potential advancement opportunities.
- Ability to maintain leadership effectiveness while focusing on maximizing operational goals and strategic success.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, fiscal planning, budgeting and reporting.

Education
- Bachelor’s degree in business, healthcare administration or a related field is required.
- Master’s degree in business or a related field is preferred.
