Impact of the organisation

There are few places in the world quite like Tasmania.

Its landscapes are home to an extraordinary concentration of plants and animals, including species found nowhere else on Earth. But protecting this natural heritage cannot happen through national parks and public reserves alone. Nature does not recognise boundaries, and much of the habitat Tasmania’s wildlife depends upon sits on privately owned land.

That is where the Tasmanian Land Conservancy comes in.

For 25 years, TLC has brought together science, community and a deep commitment to conservation to protect nature on private land across Tasmania. Today, it is one of the state’s largest private landholders and Tasmania’s premier environmental organisation focused on private land conservation.

TLC protects and cares for its own growing network of reserves, secures important habitat through permanent conservation covenants, works alongside landholders to help them care for nature on their own properties, builds a community connected to Tasmania’s natural environment, and contributes to conservation best practice through science and research.

Its ambition is significant: for Tasmania to be a global leader in nature conservation.

This is an opportunity to play a leadership role in making that ambition possible.

And for someone considering a move from interstate, it is also an opportunity to make Tasmania home – to build a career around protecting the landscapes, wildlife and places that make the state so extraordinary.

Impact you will have in this role

As Head of Engagement & Giving, you will have the opportunity to connect people with nature – and turn that connection into meaningful, long-term action.

Reporting to the CEO and sitting on TLC’s Leadership Team, you will lead the strategy that grows the community of people who care about, participate in and invest in conservation across Tasmania.

This is a broad and genuinely influential role spanning fundraising and philanthropy, supporter engagement, communications, marketing, partnerships and community participation. You will lead a talented team and work closely with the CEO, Board and colleagues across TLC to help deliver the organisation’s 2030 Strategic Plan.

Fundraising will be central to your remit. You will grow sustainable philanthropic income across major gifts, bequests, regular giving, appeals, corporate partnerships and property acquisition campaigns, while strengthening the cultivation and stewardship that sits behind successful long-term giving.

But this role is about more than raising money.

It is about building a community for conservation.

You will deepen relationships with existing supporters, introduce new people to TLC’s work and create meaningful opportunities for people to participate. You will help supporters understand not simply what TLC does, but the tangible difference their involvement can make.

You will know your supporters. You will understand what matters to them, build genuine relationships and help make TLC part of their story.

You will also shape how TLC tells its story – bringing together compelling communications, digital channels, media, marketing and storytelling to increase awareness and demonstrate the impact of conservation on private land.

This is a role for someone who can think strategically and then make things happen. Someone equally comfortable discussing strategy with a CEO and Board, developing a relationship with a major donor, empowering their team, interrogating CRM data or finding a more powerful way to tell a conservation story.

Most importantly, you will be able to see the connection between your work and its impact: stronger relationships create greater engagement; greater engagement inspires generosity; and that generosity enables TLC to protect, manage and connect more of Tasmania’s natural environment for generations to come.

  • Lead TLC’s communications and marketing approach across storytelling, brand, media, digital, advertising and other channels.
  • Strengthen the use of CRM systems, data, technology and processes to inform strategy, improve supporter engagement and enable TLC to scale its impact.
  • Lead community engagement activities including events, volunteering and partnerships.
  • Provide strategic leadership and advice to the CEO, Leadership Team and Board across engagement, giving and communications.
  • Lead, develop and support a multidisciplinary team of approximately five, creating an environment where people can thrive and deliver exceptional work.

  • Demonstrated success developing and delivering fundraising and engagement strategies that grow income, participation and supporter relationships.

  • Experience leading and developing multidisciplinary teams, with a collaborative, supportive and empowering leadership style.
  • Confidence using CRM systems, digital platforms and data to inform strategy, understand audiences and drive results.
  • A strategic mindset combined with the willingness to be hands-on and work in a growing, ambitious organisation.
  • Genuine connection to TLC’s purpose and an enthusiasm for using your skills to protect nature in Tasmania.
  • Experience within the for-purpose sector and/or knowledge of conservation will be highly regarded but is not essential.
