Position Purpose
The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for interpreting customer requirements and developing conceptual and detailed mechanical designs for components, machinery, tooling, press tools, moulds, jigs, fixtures, gauges and work-holding systems. The role involves preparing CAD models, engineering drawings and manufacturing specifications, applying engineering principles, selecting materials and components, and developing hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanically actuated systems.
The position supports CVW Engineering’s engineering and manufacturing operations through project coordination, workshop and procurement planning, quality control, inspection, testing, equipment modification and performance improvement. The Mechanical Engineer also coordinates maintenance and equipment upgrade requirements to ensure mechanical systems and production equipment meet functional, dimensional, manufacturing, quality and safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
•Interpret customer requirements, technical specifications, engineering drawings and existing components to establish functional and performance requirements.
•Develop conceptual and detailed mechanical designs for components, assemblies, machinery, tooling, press tools, moulds, jigs, fixtures, gauges and work-holding systems.
•Produce and review 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, assemblies, manufacturing drawings and associated technical documentation.
•Apply engineering principles including mechanics, materials, tolerances, fits, stresses, forces, motion and manufacturability to mechanical designs.
•Select suitable materials, components, fasteners, bearings, pneumatic and hydraulic components and other mechanical elements according to application requirements.
•Develop designs for hydraulic, pneumatic and mechanically actuated fixtures, tooling and machinery.
•Design mechanical systems to satisfy functional, dimensional, safety and manufacturing requirements.
•Modify and improve existing equipment, tooling and components based on customer requirements, performance requirements, inspection results or manufacturing feedback.
•Develop manufacturing specifications and determine equipment requirements, capacities, material flow and layout for production cells, machinery and assembly systems, including hydraulic and pneumatic piping and circuits.
•Plan and coordinate engineering projects, including scheduling workshop labour (machinists, toolmakers and fabricators) and arranging the procurement and delivery of materials, components and equipment.
•Establish and maintain engineering standards and procedures for quality control, testing, inspection, installation, modification and maintenance in accordance with ISO 9001 and relevant safety regulations.
•Inspect and evaluate the performance of machinery, tooling and production equipment, and implement improvements to ensure optimum performance is maintained.
•Develop and coordinate preventive maintenance schedules for workshop plant and equipment, and coordinate requirements for new designs, equipment upgrades and maintenance programs.
