Engineering Technologist
- Verify and sign off the dimensional accuracy of erected light-gauge steel structures.
- Conduct acceptance inspections and document findings against standards and specifications.
- Act as the technical liaison between site, design, and production teams.
About Us
Based in Canberra, the company covers builders' needs by designing, detailing, manufacturing and erecting light-gauge steel (LGS) wall frames, floor joists and roof trusses for residential and light-commercial projects. We combine in-house design and detailing with our Hume roll-forming factory and on-site erection capability, using TRUECORE® steel from BlueScope. Our frames are precision-engineered, light yet strong, termite-proof, non-combustible and carry BlueScope's 50-year warranty. With construction as our core business and a growing project pipeline, we are adding an Engineering Technologist to provide dedicated on-site technical control.
Key Responsibilities
- Verify and sign off the dimensional accuracy of erected light-gauge steel wall frames, floor joists and roof trusses — checking setting-out, levels, plumb and tolerance against the CAD detailing files, and confirming that frame connections, bracing and temporary support are installed to specification.
- Compare delivered components and design models against actual site conditions; identify clashes, dimensional mismatches and fit-up issues, and determine the technical resolution on site.
- Conduct acceptance inspection on frame connections, bracing and tolerances against AS/NZS standards, engineering wind-load requirements and BlueScope TRUECORE® specifications; record results and issue non-conformance reports where needed.
- Plan and carry out site trials and acceptance checks for new connection details, bracing methods and component batches; measure performance, document findings and prepare technical reports for the design team.
- Investigate recurring dimensional or installation issues on site, determine root cause, and recommend corrective engineering changes to detailing or fabrication, verifying the outcome on site.
- Review and refine erection methods, sequences, bracing and temporary-support arrangements to improve buildability, speed and compliance; pass technical improvements back to detailing and factory production.
- Act as the technical liaison between site, design and production teams: raise component or detailing queries, confirm modified parts perform as intended on site, and maintain a structured feedback loop.
- Prepare and maintain site technical documentation, inspection records, non-conformance logs and handover/completion schedules.
Requirements
- A relevant engineering technical qualification or equivalent hands-on engineering experience.
- Hands-on experience in on-site or plant testing, commissioning, inspection or technical troubleshooting.
- Competent with precision measuring instruments and able to read engineering drawings and CAD detailing files.
- Able to prepare clear technical reports and keep accurate measurement and inspection records.
- Comfortable working on active construction sites and working alongside trades.
What We Offer
- A permanent, full-time technical role with a growing Canberra-based builder.
- Above-award remuneration plus superannuation, on varied residential and light-commercial work.
