- Join a leading national commercial law firm as a Tax Lawyer (Associate/Senior Associate) in Brisbane.
- Gain exposure to both tax advisory and controversy work under the mentorship of a senior Tax Partner.
- Work on significant and varied matters for a sophisticated client base including government and corporate clients.
About the Role
A leading national commercial law firm is seeking an Associate or Senior Associate to join its national tax practice in Brisbane. This is a newly created opportunity offering something particularly valuable for a developing tax lawyer: close, day-to-day exposure to a Tax Partner with more than 25 years' experience across private practice and senior roles within the Australian Taxation Office.
Rather than being confined to either advisory or controversy work, you will develop experience across both sides of a sophisticated tax practice. On the front-end, you will advise on income tax, Capital Gains Tax (CGT), GST, private rulings and Australian duties, together with taxation issues arising from commercial transactions and arrangements. On the back-end, you will work across ATO reviews and audits, notices of objection, proceedings before the Administrative Review Tribunal (ART), and Federal Court tax litigation and appeals.
The matters are significant and varied, spanning complex deals, projects and disputes for a sophisticated client base including government, major private and corporate clients and high-net-worth individuals.
For a tax lawyer looking to deepen their technical expertise while gaining broader exposure, this is an opportunity to develop into a genuinely well-rounded and autonomous tax adviser.
Who We're Looking For
You will be a technically capable tax lawyer with at least 2 years relevant experience, with the firm open to considering candidates through to Senior Associate level.
You may currently specialise more heavily in tax advisory or tax controversy. You do not need to have done everything. What is important is a strong grounding in taxation law and an interest in broadening your practice.
You will be proactive, reliable and commercially minded, with a genuine commitment to achieving strong client outcomes.
Candidates with accounting or broader finance experience are also encouraged to apply however, a minimum of 2 years' legal experience practising as a lawyer is essential.
Why Consider This Opportunity?
The quality of the mentoring and exposure is a genuine point of difference.
You will work closely with a senior Tax Partner whose career spans more than 25 years across private practice and the ATO, bringing deep insight into tax advisory, ATO decision-making, audits, objections, dispute strategy and tax litigation.
For someone building a long-term career in tax, that provides an opportunity to understand not only how complex taxation matters are advised on, but how disputes develop, how the ATO approaches them and how they are strategically managed through objection, review and litigation.
Just as importantly, the breadth of the practice means you can build capability across advisory, transactions, controversy and litigation, rather than becoming narrowly specialised too early in your career.
You will also benefit from the platform and resources of a leading national commercial firm while retaining close access to senior practitioners and meaningful involvement in sophisticated client matters.
Employee Benefits
Alongside the quality of the work and career development on offer, the firm provides a supportive and flexible working environment, including:
- Family-friendly and flexible working arrangements
- Flexible leave, including purchased leave, career breaks and study leave
- Dress for your day
- Modern offices and a supportive professional environment
- Employee Assistance Program and annual flu vaccinations
- Regular social activities
- Employee recruitment referral bonus
- Opportunities to contribute to pro bono and social justice initiatives
- Diversity, gender equality and wellbeing initiatives.
APPLY NOW
If you are already developing a career in taxation law and want greater breadth, sophisticated work and close mentoring from a highly experienced tax practitioner, this is an opportunity well worth exploring.
Applications are welcomed from lawyers whose experience has been weighted towards either advisory or controversy, provided you have a solid taxation foundation and are motivated to continue developing across the broader practice.
