Design Engineer - Mechanical

PERSOL is one of Australia's largest and longest serving recruitment providers. Delivering both quality temporary and permanent options, we specialise in the recruitment of Professional, ICT, Government, STEM, Management and Executive talent.

Our Tier 1 Mining Client is looking for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join a technical engineering team delivering innovative mechanical equipment and design solutions within a major resources and industrial environment.

Roster: 5/2 Forrestfield location

Start date: ASAP

Duration: approx. 8 months - with potential to extend

Please note that only people with relevant experience will be considered and contacted.

The Role:

This is a hands-on design role offering involvement across the full engineering lifecycle, from concept development and detailed design through to fabrication, assembly, testing and continuous improvement.

Working closely with engineers, workshop personnel, fabricators and external suppliers, you will help turn mechanical concepts into practical, buildable equipment that meets operational requirements and manufacturing standards.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Lead mechanical design activities from initial requirements and concepts through detailed design, drawing release and design improvements.
  • Develop accurate 3D models, complex assemblies, production-ready 2D drawings and bills of materials using Autodesk Inventor.
  • Apply design-for-manufacture and assembly principles to ensure equipment is practical to fabricate, assemble, operate and maintain.
  • Consider materials, tolerances, fits, interfaces, access requirements and fabrication methods during the design process.
  • Prepare, check and maintain technical drawings, specifications, design records and engineering change documentation.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, workshop teams, fabricators and suppliers to resolve technical issues and improve designs.
  • Support procurement, fabrication, assembly and testing of prototypes and mechanical equipment.
  • Troubleshoot issues identified during physical builds and incorporate improvements into subsequent design revisions.
  • Coordinate external fabrication and design activities where required, including technical scopes, supplier queries and review of deliverables.
  • Maintain accurate drawing revisions and document control throughout the design and release process.

Required Experience:

  • At least five years of relevant mechanical design engineering experience.
  • Extensive hands-on experience using Autodesk Inventor, including detailed part modelling and complex assemblies.
  • Demonstrated experience taking mechanical designs from concept through to fabrication-ready detail and physical build.
  • Strong practical knowledge of manufacturing methods, including machining, sheet metal, welding and fabrication.
  • Sound understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, including materials selection, fits and tolerances, drawing standards and GD&T where appropriate.
  • Experience producing detailed manufacturing drawings, bills of materials and technical documentation.
  • The ability to work autonomously, manage changing priorities and identify technical constraints early.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineering, workshop and supplier teams.
  • A practical, problem-solving mindset and a commitment to delivering safe, reliable and maintainable designs.
  • Experience developing prototypes, test rigs or specialised one-off equipment.
  • Experience supporting fabrication, assembly, testing, troubleshooting and commissioning.
  • Familiarity with Autodesk Vault, engineering change control and structured drawing release processes.
  • Experience in research and development, product development or environments where designs evolve through testing and physical build.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping and practical workshop processes.
