JobScout Pty Ltd is assisting our client, Australasian Progressive Group Pty Ltd (APG), a diversified building materials group with more than 27 years of experience supplying Australia’s construction and mining industries. APG’s portfolio includes Mesh & Bar, Meshworks and Builders Centre, supported by a team of more than 500 people.

As the group continues to grow, our client is seeking a qualified Accountant (in-house title: Business Accountant) to join their Sydney finance team on a full-time, ongoing basis.

Responsibilities of our Accountant will include:

  • Prepare and analyse monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements, management reports and supporting schedules for APG and its group entities.
  • Develop, prepare and monitor budgets, cash flow forecasts and financial projections for the group’s manufacturing, supply and retail divisions, and report on variances against budget.
  • Prepare and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS), GST, PAYG and FBT returns, and assist with the preparation of income tax returns in line with Australian Taxation Office requirements.
  • Provide advice to management on taxation obligations, financial planning, business performance and cost-saving opportunities.
  • Analyse financial results, including inventory valuation and gross margins across the group’s divisions, and report findings and recommendations to management.
  • Establish, review and maintain accounting systems, policies and internal controls to ensure accurate financial records and safeguard company assets.
  • Perform balance sheet reconciliations, including bank, debtors, creditors, inventory, fixed assets and accruals, and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes and prepare reports and working papers for external auditors, liaising with auditors and external tax advisers as required.
  • Monitor and analyse working capital, cash flow and debtor and creditor positions, and advise management on strategies to improve cash management across the group.
  • Ensure compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, the Corporations Act, taxation legislation and other statutory reporting obligations.
  • Prepare ad hoc financial analysis, feasibility assessments and business cases to support management decision-making, capital expenditure and growth initiatives.

To be successfully considered for the role, you:

  • Hold a recognised bachelor’s degree (or higher qualification) in Accounting, Commerce, Finance or a closely related field.
  • Have at least 1+ years’ professional experience working as an Accountant, ideally within a manufacturing, construction, wholesale or multi-entity business environment.
  • Have demonstrated experience in preparing financial statements, budgets, forecasts and BAS/tax lodgements.
  • Possess a sound understanding of Australian Accounting Standards, GST and taxation legislation, and statutory reporting requirements.
  • Are proficient with accounting software (e.g. MYOB, Xero, SAP or similar ERP systems) and advanced Microsoft Excel.
  • Have strong analytical skills, with the ability to interpret financial data and present clear reports and recommendations to management.
  • Have excellent attention to detail, time management and the ability to meet month-end and statutory deadlines.
  • Are a team player who can communicate effectively with management, operational staff, auditors and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain a professional attitude and a proactive, ‘can do’ approach at all times.

Are you passionate about delivering accurate and insightful financial reporting? Do you enjoy working in a growing, multi-entity business? Do you have a strong working knowledge of accounting, taxation and Australian Accounting Standards? Are you a team player who thrives in a fast-paced commercial environment?

You must have unrestricted Australian working rights to be considered.
